The 30th annual Southeaterns, the 2012 Southeastern Regional Skill Level Championships

March 1st by Thomas Rumpler

The 30th annual Southeaterns, the 2012 Southeastern Regional Skill Level Championships, came to a rousing conclusion this past Sunday. Six regional champions were crowned, and twelve regional finalists earned free entry into the US Skill Level Nationals, in Baltimore, MD, the weekend of March 23-25.

Complete tournament results can be found on the US Squash website: http://www.ussquash.com/ssm/pages/tournaments/information.asp?tournament_id=2934

Allow me a short backstory to accompany the first photo.

The 2012 Southeastern Open Champion (6.0) is young Andrew Kriete, currently a teaching pro at the Chatham Club in NJ. The Kriete family & the Warner family have been friends for literally 30 years, from the time the late Dr. Robert Warner & Dr. Roger Kriete attended Williams college together, while learning the lifetime game of squash together there. The Krietes & Warners have remained close friends ever since, all through the national junior tournaments and college squash. Catie played #3 at Williams, Brian #1 at Amherst, and Lizzy #1 at Bowdoin. Andrew also wound up playing squash at Amherst College, alternating with Brian at first racquet.

Therefore, it feels especially fitting to see Catie & Brian present the Champion’s trophy to Andrew.

The tournament, Midtown, and I personally, wish to express our deepest thanks to Dr. Jan Warner and the estate of Dr. Robert Warner for making the Southeastern Championships so extraordinary. The Warners have been an amazing, integral, & unconditionally supporting part of Atlanta squash ever since 1996, when dad & mom dragged three little kids through the Squash Annex doors.

P.S. Dr. Jan Warner has already pledged the Warner Family support for the 2013 Southeasterns!
