10th annual DragonDoc 2011 Squash Championships

August, 2011 by Thomas Rumpler

The 10th annual DragonDoc Squash Championships is now in the record books. Even by its own high standards this one seemed to stand out for many of us. Of the many highlights, allow me to point out a handful of my own favorites.

More women played the tournament than at any time in memory.

Lazarus Chilufya ended Patrick Chifunda’s reign as the DragonDoc Pro Champion. While Patrick was visibly suffering from his Saturday Pyrrhic victory over Joseph Ehalen, nevertheless Lazarus displayed some of the most extraordinary movement & volleying ever seen at Midtown. • Aaron Luque set a new record for both number of matches played & dives successfully executed, at any tournament in ATL history, numbering 10 & 3 dozen respectively.

A new kind of children’s crusade was showcased by the number of teenagers who made it to the final four or better: Arhum & Nabil Saleem, 6.0s; Sarah Caughhey, W4.0 champion; Rajiv Reddy & Will Grady, champion & finalist, 3.0s; Courtney Clement, finalist in W3.0s. If you add in college age “juniors,” you have both winner & finalist in the 4.5s, Clark Brading & John Woodhams; Andrew North, 5.0 champion; Lizzy Warner. Finalist W4.0s. In short, the veterans are running out of time!

More players seemed to play more matches than ever before.

The hospitality & jackets were very big hits.

Professional photographer Catherine Cobb captured hundreds of photos that will be published soon. A few of my own amateurish shots are attached.

Midtown’s Chris Tham managed yet another 6.0 championship, this time barely surviving the semi. Once again, our sincerest thanks go to 2nd year presenting sponsor Mikel Muffley; and to Dr. Gary Myerson, of Arthritis & Rheumatology of GA, the inimitable DragonDoc. Without their support, we would not have our Summer “big one.” Thank you!
